A note from the organizers

━━━━

The sun has officially set on the 2024 World AeroPress Championship, and we’re taking a moment to reflect on another monumental season, while looking forward to the upcoming year.

In 2024, we saw over 6,000 competitors take to the stage in 164 National and Regional events, across 64 countries – the largest cohort of global participation in our sixteen year history. For the world final weekend, we expanded our programme to five events across three days of activities, with new formats and activations to further integrate our sponsor brands in authentic, impactful ways.

Thanks to the hard work of our small team, our network of hosts around the world, the support of our sponsors, and the blessing of AeroPress Inc., we’ve continued to grow the champs, reach new coffee markets, and leave a positive impression on the lives of coffee lovers across the globe.

(And we’re gearing up to do it all again.)

The Official Welcome Event for the World AeroPress Championship (WAC) has become a key feature of our annual program, designed to foster a sense of community and camaraderie among our national champions.

We recognize that creating a positive and memorable experience for competitors is critical to the ongoing success of the championship, and the sponsors that support us.

This year’s welcome event exemplified that focus, bringing competitors together on neutral ground to establish connections before the intensity of competition began. By meeting away from the competitive stage, we ensured that champions could bond and build mutual respect in a relaxed atmosphere.

Our 2024 cohort gathered at the Rocha Conde de óbidos viewpoint for a scenic introduction, starting with a group photo. From there, the group made their way down to the dock, where they were surprised to learn they would soon set sail on the Ganga, a stunning four-mast tall ship we’d chartered for the afternoon. This unexpected adventure provided an unforgettable shared experience, setting the right tone for the weekend.

Throughout the event, the champions saw the riverside sights of Lisbon, while connecting over their shared achievements and the unique journey that brought them to the world final. This sense of mutual respect, rather than rivalry, was at the heart of the experience. By the time they faced each other in competition, they were not just competitors but peers united by a shared passion.

As an opening act for this year’s WAC, we introduced The AeroPress Invitational, a new championship format providing more opportunities to integrate our partners and their products into the competition and put them directly into the hands of the biggest names in coffee.

For the Invitational, we gave 12 AeroPress superfans the once in a lifetime chance to go head-to-head, brewing against our panel of ‘Legends’ made up of industry leaders and influencers for a prestigious spot on the world final judging panel.

Our first round put the focus squarely on one of our key partners, Oatly. Invitees were tasked with developing recipes for a signature iced drink using oat milk as a core ingredient. Twelve unique drinks were shaken, stirred, and blended to please the palate of Lance while spectators looked on with eager eyes, proving that there is hunger for integrating new products into the WAC competition format.

In the following rounds, brewing limits were lifted as both invitees and legends alike used their Comandante grinders and
varia kettles to serve their best AeroPress recipes. Ultimately, the winner was one of our invitees, Rufus Blad, the ‘21 Spanish AeroPress Champ who fulfilled his dream of winning on the world stage.

The main event, which never fails to disappoint. At the climax of the entire season, 60 national champions took to the stage with sponsored and gifted gear from our partners to brew for our panel of esteemed judges and fans.

The air buzzed with excitement as 750 coffee lovers from around the world filled the venue to witness history in the making. With all things WAC, the breadth of reach is one asset, but the quality of our audience is what sets the stage for our partners’ success.

Over the next five hours, 60 became 16, 16 became 4, and our 2024 World Champion, George Stanica, a passionate home brewer from Romania, reigned victorious and was crowned.
